Since 1986, Marieke Bolhuis has been making engaged installations. For the Oud-Amelisweerd estate, she made a wallpaper with a desolate forest landscape of leafless trees, partly painted and partly constructed of tire tracks from cars and mopeds. It was a reference to the vain protest ten years earlier against the cutting of trees to widen the A27 motorway.
For the past eight years, the human figure has played the leading role. Bolhuis works on three life-sized sculptures that she endlessly reworks and transforms as if they were nature itself. By now, the three have grown to 40 sculptures. Sisters seem powerless, so without arms, helpless, but it is not. There is no question of giving up, as their grounded boots also say. The sisters remain combative and have even survived the pandemic.
